Job Description
Reporting to the Head of Business Lines Underwriting, the Head of Casualty & SME will have full responsibility to manage and drive the overall success of the Casualty & SME portfolios using their knowledge and expertise.

Your Role
This role involves supporting the development and execution of underwriting practices within the assigned area of expertise, handling complex assignments, and operating under a high level of delegated authority.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement business and pricing strategies aligned with regional and global objectives.
  • Provide technical underwriting expertise and support to Sales, Distribution, and Operations teams to achieve business goals.
  • Manage various underwriting requests within established authority limits.
  • Use best-practice portfolio management tools and techniques.
  • Continuously monitor claims data and economic trends to adjust business strategies accordingly.
  • Lead the development of underwriting standards, controls, and procedures.
  • Identify opportunities for new product offerings based on customer and market insights.
  • Oversee the design and execution of risk coverage for key propositions.
  • Support professional development for team members.
  • Provide timely management reports with recommendations.

Your Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the management of the Casualty & SME portfolios, including profit and loss accountability.
  • Developing and leading the business strategy for the Casualty line to drive profitable growth.
  • Supporting the delivery of the SME strategy in partnership with the Head of SME.
  • Collaborating with the Business Lines Transformation Team and the Head of SME to implement a new technology platform.
  • Developing products, propositions, and technical expertise to support the business.
  • Working closely with Sales, Market Underwriters, Claims, and Actuarial teams to meet business objectives.
  • Leveraging expertise to lead the development of technical standards and practices in underwriting.
  • Leading various initiatives and action plans to drive business goals.
  • Building relationships with customers, business partners, and trade organizations to maintain a strong leadership presence in the market.
  • Operating under limited supervision and in accordance with underwriting policies and regulatory requirements.

Your Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate should have:

  • At least 10 years of senior management experience within a Casualty or SME portfolio.
  • Advanced technical knowledge and a proven track record of progressing through increasingly responsible underwriting roles.
  • Significant underwriting authority and participation in industry trade bodies.
  • A deep understanding of underwriting principles, metrics, and portfolio management tools.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to make effective decisions.
  • The ability to meet strict deadlines and achieve ambitious targets.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities.
  • Strong people management and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Well-established relationships with external brokers and customers.
  • Commercial acumen and adaptability in a fast-paced market environment.
